The programming and services provided by resource teachers are intended to assist students experiencing learning difficulties in achieving the outcomes of the Public School Programs curriculum or, in the case of students with an Individual Program Plan, their individualized outcomes. The collaboration that is critical to ensuring the essential relationship between learning outcomes and support is facilitated thought the participation of both resource and classroom teachers in the program planning process.
From the Nova Scotia Public Schools Program Document, section B-5
What does a Resource Teacher do?Resource teachers work with students who have been identified as needing extra support to experience success with their learning. Resource teachers work as a team with students, classroom teachers, parents/guardians, and other professionals to develop appropriate programming and supports.
What else does a Resource Teacher do?
From the Nova Scotia Public Schools Program Document, section B-5 How to get support for your childIf your child is struggling with school, the first person you should speak to is your child's teacher. In collaboration with your child's teacher, you can explore strategies to support your child's learning. This is the beginning of the program planning process. For many students, the process does not go past this stage because their needs are met through adaptations in the classroom. However, for those whose learning needs are not met, the next step in the program planning process is followed with a referral to the School Team. Your child's teacher can help you through this process.
